College Education Funding and Costs

The financing of your education is a partnership among you, your family, the school you attend, your lender(s), and federal/state governments. Each partner has requirements as well as benefits.

Possible Income Sources

  • Apply for Federal Work-study to assist with college expenses while enrolled at the university if your family income qualifies. Become a counselor at school.

  • Become a counselor at school

  • Search for scholarship opportunities after while in school: http://www.fastweb.com. Fastweb is a free scholarship search service.

  • "Learning while earning"-participate in a co-op program, which offers work experience and a paycheck while getting your education.

  • Work full or part-time while taking one or two courses per semester.

  • Investigate various academic departments that offer aid based on merit (grades).

  • Be a tutor for others and charge a fee.

  • Give music or sports lessons for a fee.

  • Be a waiter or kitchen help to pay for your meals.

  • Sell unneeded goods, vehicles, collections, etc.

  • Increase net income by reducing job-related expenses (transportation, childcare, place of residence, clothes, etc).

  • Obtain a different job or a different shift.

  • Take less tax withholding to get more cash flow.

  • Exchange goods or services with others, thereby decreasing the need for money.

  • Obtain your "earned income credit" if your wages were or are low enough and you are independent from parents. Check with the Internal Revenue Service - state and federal - and with your employment office for form W-5.

  • Have a summer job that pays well and gives you valuable experience. (Of course, you can benefit from negative experiences if they teach you something or help you decide what you do not want to do the rest of your life).

  • Arrange for early inheritance from a relative or request a loan with no or low interest from them.
