Financial Assistance at the College or University (Check your university for programs similar to the examples given here.)

ou may have already received guidance and information regarding financial aid from your high school guidance counselors, college fairs in your communities, as well as the College or University. For more financial assistance information, go to the Financial Aid Office and their World Wide Web homepage. Here are a few reminders:

A Scholarship is an award of money that need not be repaid. It can be based on financial need, merit or both. Check with your college financial aid office on how to apply for college scholarships. The academic schools and departments generally administer these awards and select the recipients. A fraternity or sorority may also give scholarships.

Grants are similar to scholarships because they are not repaid or earned through employment. Eligibility for grants requires only that students demonstrate need and make satisfactory progress. Check with your college/university financial aid website.

Fee remission is an award that cancels all or part of a student's fees and/or tuition. Check with your college/ university financial aid website.

An outside award or private award is money given to students by persons or organizations outside the University. Generally the donor of the award selects the recipients. Money may be gifted to you.

To be considered for most grants, scholarships, and fee remissions at the University students must file a Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA)/Renewal Application. Filing deadline for most universities is March 1. See http://www.fafsa.gov

Fellowships are scholarships for graduate students. (http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/).

Costs of Education

Discuss the costs with your family to clarify the extent to which you will each be responsible financially for parts of your education.

Besides tuition and books, flexible costs depend on:

  • Where you choose to live.

  • How/where/what you choose to eat.

  • Method of transportation that you use.

  • Your choices of entertainment, recreation, and socialization.

  • The courses in which you are enrolled regarding the books, booklets, projects, fees, etc.
