Employment
Section I / Section II / Section III / Section IV

Salary or financial gain is not the only important aspect of employment. Important, also, are benefits, flexible spending accounts, and opportunity to gain experience, skills, and insight. Different jobs build a credible resume.

Employment is not only a financial enterprise. It can foster a sense of self-worth. A good job can make you

  • Feel needed and more economically secure.

  • Feel a sense of accomplishment; enjoy life.

  • Feel as if you have contributed something to the field.

  • Become conscious of a professional identity.

  • Contribute positively to your growth and to your family's happiness.

  • Allow you to continue your hobbies or avocation.

Decisions you make now and upon graduation affect your whole self not just your income.

Decisions about Employment During College

Consider the advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages of Employment During College:

  • Defrays the cost of college.

  • Develops basic job skills (human capital) and interpersonal skills for future work and community work.

  • Develops contacts for future employment (networking and reference).

  • Enhances career possibilities even if not paid (volunteer if you need experience).

  • Helps you decide what you want to do or not do permanently.

  • Makes college affordable even if it takes more years to complete.

  • Improves time and energy management skills (Warning: Don't substitute work for study).

  • Makes study more palatable.

  • Builds your resume which is viewed positively by prospective employers.

When you work part-time, employers often do not have the financial capability to provide you with traditional health, medical and retirement benefits. Employers of college students will "pay" you in monetary and service income. Service income includes free or reduced cost meals, coffee, employee discounts on purchases (such as clothing and apparel), and aesthetic products such as tanning booth privileges. Most college students take advantage of such service income, but few actually recognize their value.
