Sources of Financial Assistance

The U.S. Department of Education is the largest federal source of financial aid for college. Other federal programs also provide scholarships, loans, job training, and money to pay existing student loans.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs provides assistance through the Montgomery GI Bill, Veterans Educational Assistance Program, Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program, Work-Study, and Tutorial Assistance.

The U.S. Army and Air Force offer education benefits for individuals enlisted in selected military occupational specialties. The Montgomery GI Bill and the Army's College Fund are among programs that offer financial assistance.

AmeriCorps is a service program that allows people of all ages and backgrounds to earn assistance in paying their higher education expenses in exchange for a year of service in the United States.

The U.S. Public Health Service provides a variety of loans, scholarships, and faculty loan repayment programs to students pursuing health professions, such as dentistry, public health, optometry, and veterinary medicine. It is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) provides tuition and free assistance for job training for the economically disadvantaged, dislocated workers, and others. It is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Military Service. Available primarily to U.S. citizens, you may receive government tuition assistance if you are interested in pursuing a career in the military or if you are a veteran or a dependent of a veteran. In some states, veterans receive total tuition. Other programs provide a way to earn money for college while serving one's country and community:
