Preventive Insurance

You can reduce the premium costs of insurance or reduce the hazards that cause damage. Preventive measures are:

  • Practice defensive driving. Insurance companies investigate if their customers have a reckless-driving or drunk-driving conviction within the past five years.

  • Use an anti-theft device on your car.

  • Don't drive when you have not had adequate sleep. (This is as dangerous as having drunk too much alcohol.)

  • Don't let the radio or friends distract you.

  • If you must use a cellular phone, get a speaker adapter. (Drivers who use cell phones have four times as many accidents.)

  • Keep tires in good condition.

  • Always wear your seat belt and insist that others riding with you wear them.

  • Practice safety and take precautions in your living habits and all that you do within your home or apartment. Engaging in risky sports can contribute to increasing the insurance premium you pay.

  • Promote good health by having periodic physical checkups, being disciplined in dietary control and healthy eating choices, getting daily exercise, avoiding tobacco use, and promptly taking care of all health problems or abnormalities.

  • Prevent the risk of financial disaster from divorce by decisions, attitudes, and behavior. Communicate with your spouse; develop a unique household management system; "solve your problems" rather than "fight" (attacking person rather than problem) or "flight." Practice forgiveness; and protect family relationships as an important asset on your way to economic success.

  • Be extremely careful not to expose your social security number to unreliable people.

Credibility Insurance

Finally, credibility insurance is a protection against loss of job. With credibility insurance, when you have a family or health problem, disruption to personal life, or special needs, you can gain special accommodations because you have proven loyal and diligent in the past. You have gone the "extra mile" or "out of your way" to help your boss or company. It is part of your "reputation."

Also, protection against loss of job includes having diversified skills and being willing to adapt on the job or be flexible in choosing a new job. The evolving work environment requires your staying current and ready with new skills. Be knowledgeable on current issues in your profession.

If you need to find a new job, identify the skills and responsibilities that you can transfer.

Acquire credibility insurance:

  • During college-live and work responsibly. Carry your part of the load daily and be aware of how you can assist others and teachers. Look for ways to do extra!

  • At your employment-arrive early and be organized to take on the day's activities.
Be creative and willing to modify or change your methods of working and your focus.

  • Be creative and willing to modify or change your methods of working and your focus

Protect yourself from true identity fraud. Great risk occurs when a crook steals your identity with your Social Security number or a friend uses your S.S. card or other identification cards. Know when you have to give your S.S. number, and when you do not. It is necessary in these circumstances: income tax records, medical records, credit bureau reports, college records, loan applications, vehicle registrations. You have the right to refuse to give out your S.S. number in these circumstances: written on personal checks, given over the phone to callers offering credit cards, club memberships, identification for store purchases and refunds, address labels, and general identification purposes.

Risk management is an important step to economic security and financial success!
